Markets across the country are full of low quality and inexpensive imported articles which make the environment tough for competition and import substitution. Domestic production capability has progressively declined and the embryonic manufacturing industry seems to be unable to compete with the flood of imports while there is no effective and efficient quality control on these commodities. The project will enable ANSA to develop and enforce mandatory national standards through relevant government entities in the current five fields of ANSA’s operation (petroleum products, construction, food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, metrology) and also in two new fields (textiles and electronic goods). The project will also facilitate the implementation of and compliance with the standards introduced through awareness programs and publications. The enforcement of sound standards will limit the import of sub-standard quality products and encourage quality national production and exports by creating a level playing field in the market. It is worthwhile to mention that introduction and enforcement of sound standards will eventually benefit the end users in Afghanistan. This project will consist of four major components that will focus on: 1- Capacity Development of ANSA’s 7 Technical Committees 2- Development of 44 Standards in 7 areas 3- Standards Enforcement 4- Ensuring Sustainable Mechanism for Standards Development at ANSA
